With the 2001 season over and the off-season tests for 2002 about to begin, McLaren announced they would be switching tyre suppliers. One of the staff at the time recalls the shock they felt: "It really shook us up. But what it also did was make every one extremely motivated to develop a winning tyre. We were determined that we would make McLaren look back and regret their decision to abandon us." To further boost our competitive strength, we asked Ferrari to put together a dedicated tyre test team. This would prove a very successful idea. When Ferrari asked us at the test just before the Italian GP to provide them with some extra edge, we were able to respond. An urgent meeting in Tokyo on Friday decided on a new compound. We worked round the clock and shipped the new tyres on Tuesday, in time for the race. An episode like this illustrates the strong relationship we had with Ferrari, a relationship that allowed us to make them tyres specially tailored to bring out the best in their machines and in Michael Schumacher's driving.
