After the disasters of the previous year, we focused our 2004 development efforts on eliminating weak points. Specifically, we needed to develop soft compounds that would be more resistant to heat, and tyre constructions and shapes that wouldn't stress these soft compounds in use. The changes we made were instantly apparent to the eye, especially in the front tyres. The new shape on the front was designed to give more stability during braking, allowing drivers to tackle hairpin bends a lot more aggressively. The rear tyres featured a new construction that gave improved traction. This was also the year that Ferrari entered perhaps their finest car ever, the legendary F2004. The result was that our rival Michelin was completely out of the running as Bridgestone-shod cars won a stunning 15 races out of 18. During this year we developed about 200 tyres, bringing around 50 to the track. These efforts paid off: compared to the humiliation of Schumacher being lapped at Hungaroring the previous year, the 2004 Hungarian GP was the best race of the season with Ferrari taking first and second places.
