Tyre Technology

As sole supplier again after six years of competition, our major concern was now to ensure fairness and impartiality. Accordingly, we decided to supply a new tyre design that was clearly different to the one used the previous year. This was in order to eliminate any advantage for teams that had used Bridgestone tyres the previous season. The new tyres had the same size, but less grip, and this caused the handling to tend toward oversteer. This year's new regulations meant that drivers must use two specifications of tyre during the race, and the teams were requested to construct cars that could be set up to match both specifications. The result was an exciting season, with a close fight to the finish between teams now all using the same make of tyre. Hamashima looks back with considerable pride on the tyres we provided this year. "If we had continued to supply the same tyres as the previous year, then that would surely have given an advantage to Ferrari, Williams and Toyota. By not doing so, we gave the fans a season that kept them on the edge of their seats until the final race. I think we can be rather proud of this."
