Tyre Technology

This was to be Bridgestone's last year in Formula One. The first thing we did was to change to the narrower front tyres we had wanted to introduce the previous year. This was in order to regain the optimal grip balance lost with the change from grooved to slick tyres. At the same time, we reduced the difference in softness between soft and hard compounds in an attempt to reduce the performance difference between the specs. A major change in the regulations for 2010 was the prohibition on refuelling during the race. This meant that cars had to start the race carrying about 160 kg more fuel, which obviously placed a much greater burden on the tyres. And because there was no need for pit stops to refuel, the only factor determining a compulsory pit stop were the regulations which stipulated the need to use both types of dry tyre in the race. We concentrated very hard on ensuring that our tyres would be durable enough to do long stints with heavy fuel loads. We put our utmost efforts into this, and they paid off when Sebastian Vettel became the youngest driver ever to take the championship. In the Italian GP, his soft compound Bridgestone tyres carried Vettel all the way to the final lap, in a conclusive demonstration of the durability we had successfully developed.
